Welcome to Fun Advice!

I believe that you have to be available for work in order to receive unemployment benefits. In any event, make sure that you have already applied for benefits so that the one or two week waiting period is passed before you go into jail. Then, collect your benefits until you have to go to jail then (like the day before you go to jail) notify the unemployment office that you are going to be unavailable for the next four months. Then, when you get out, reinstate your unemployment claim which will occur without a waiting period because you have already completed that and you aren’t opening a new claim.

Just a few questions rich is this your first criminal conviction? And if so when you get out are you planning on finding another job straight away? The only reason I ask and it doesn’t really matter either way but I wanted to give you some advice about getting back on your feet afterwards. Cause the main thing not to concentrate on why or how you got into jail but getting back on feet and starting over after.

While you are in jail you may not receive your unemployment benefits or receive reduced benefits because you will not need to provide for yourself whilst your inside.

The best thing for you to do would be to contact your local unemployment agency or government agency in your area which pays your unemployment and discuss the predicament. Unfortunately you may find it a little harder to get a job when you come out due to having a criminal record however your local unemployment agency should be able to offer you assistance or advise you of another agency that can help seek employment for you knowing of your criminal record.

Sorry I could not be of further help I have never been in this situation or have had any criminal convictions but this is what I would assume. Lots of luck and take care
