Why is Iceland green and Greenland is ice?

Answer #1

Interesting question. It’s depend on the environemnt. The quality and the nature of a specific thing is more important than the meaning of it’s name. That’s why there is no egg in eggplant and no apple in pineapple.

Answer #3

Because it is nicer to explain: This green land is called Iceland and this iced land is called Greenland THAN his ice land is called Iceland and this green land is called Greenland O.O.

Answer #4

becuase the first settlers wanted people to think that Iceland was covered in ice so no one would want to come and so they would go to Greenland thinking that it was green and not ice covered.

Answer #5

Greenland used to be green - on the coast at least - when the Viking leader Eric the red first discovered it. (Climate in the region was a little different than it is today) And he wanted to attract settlers. Do he picked the name Greenland to pretend having found a fertile land.

Iceland is called Iceland because of its large glaciers.
