How to cut a shih-tzu's hair?

Answer #1

Bath, dry and comb out dog.

Using a #1 or #2 blade attachment comb, clip the entire coat, starting at the base of the skull, the base of the ears, and under the jaw line (thus omitting the head, face, beard, tail, feet and
ears).
Fluff with the a medium metal comb and scissor all ends evenly. Comb forward the front 1/2 inch of hair on the head over the eyes and scissor evenly across the eyes. Scissor the head to blend into this line and continue to blend into the ears and the side of the face .. (Note: The head, face, and beard should be scissored according to coat length on the body.) Comb face and beard downward and scissor around from the base of each ear across the beard, thus forming a round “U” shape. Blend the sides of the face into the beard and around the you shape. Comb through with the metal comb and scissor evenly all loose ends. *Finish the dog by scissoring the feet.

I found this off a sight. it looks correct. but if so, bring it to petco or something to have it groomed and cut

Answer #2

Ideally, if you don’t know how to do this you should take your dog to a professional groomer…however…if you insist on doing it yourself:

  • Make sure your clippers are good and sharp
  • Bathe your dog
  • Brush out the coat
  • If you are trimming the hair down into a puppy cut, then use a #4 clipper and basically, just “shave” (it’s not really shaved) the dog by bringing the clippers down the body in the direction of hair growth
  • If you are leaving the hair long, then you need to shave underneath the dog, but leave the hair on the paws intact. The coat should be combed straight down and slightly trimmed so that it just skirts the floor
