First of all, it is not an ‘oddly coloured pokemon’. It is what we call a ‘shiny’ pokemon. To catch it purely depends on very, very good luck , because it is 1 in 8, 192 battles. Even if you beat 8, 192 pokemon, you may still not find it.

I know this because I once gaped at my 9 year old cousin’s luck at finding a purple Magcargo and capturing it before my eyes in pokemon Diamond. As you now know, it is a shiny. Actually, in the pokemon games, you can save when near a legendary and battle it. If you have enough patience, you can turn it on and off until you have the shiny legendary.
