Does the bible really say that homosexuality is wrong?

Does the bible really say that homosexuality is wrong?

Do you think it is?

I’m not a homosexual, but I do believe that they were born that way. I don’t think they are mental, or that they are evil or anything like that. I don’t think they CHOSE to be that. I feel that it’s there right, and that NO ONE can tell THEM how to live THERE life. I think it’s just plain stupid for someone to have hatred towards someone just because of that.

Answer #1

There is a good documentary about this very subject. It is “For the Bible Tells Me So” I found it very informative and insightful.

Answer #2

People read the comments HAD god created man and man there would have been NO reproduction there for he had to creat an opposit sex ! Now just BECAUSE god created man and woman DOSE NOT mean that god dose not condon this. The bibble also states that you shall no judge your nieghbor but it seems like all the little bibble thumpers forget that when began attacking sombody do to there belifes!

Answer #3

I go to a school FULL of christian teachers, because my school is christian ethos basically, and they ALL say that it’s wrong.

In my opinion, thinking homosexuality is wrong, is wrong in itself. If everyone is equal in gods eyes, why should it matter who someone falls in love with? It shouldn’t matter, regardless of their sex.

I’m not homosexual, but some of my friends are, and they’ve been mocked, even HIT, for being that way. I’m certain they didn’t choose to be that way.

Answer #4

The biblle says a lot of things. And whatever it says, most people don’t even listen to it. I also beleive that if your a girl and you like a girl-Why Not? If your a guy and you like a guy-Why not? It doesn’t matter to me, who you are is who you are, and No ONE can change you.

What the Sodom story was really about (not homosexuality)

The Sodom Story - Genesis 19:1-29 Homophobic Viewpoint: “Sodom was destroyed because of homosexuality.” Scriptural Viewpoint: Sodom was a lush beautiful region of land whose inhabitants had known the goodness of God. Despite their exposure to, experience with, and witness of the one true loving Creator, the people of Sodom had rejected a relationship with God, and turned to numerous types of idolatry. When God’s messengers were sent to the city, the men of Sodom responded by threatening the ultimate act of violent abuse, murder, disrespect and humiliation. They were going to RAPE God’s representatives.

All other Old and New Testament references to Sodom involved the sins of idolatry, inhospitality, indifference toward the poor and the rejection of God’s messengers. There are NO REFERENCES to same sex acts or HOMOSEXUALITY.

What Romans 1:26-27 was really about in context

If taken out of context, this passage seems to condemn homosexuals. However, when Romans 1:26-27 is considered within the context of Romans 1:16 through Romans 2:16, the Scriptures clearly present a different teaching.

Paul was writing to the church in Rome. The Roman church had become troubled by divisions related to spiritual pride. Paul was addressing the Christians in Rome and teaching about the pagans in Rome. After declaring the power of Christ’s gospel to save all, he pointed out that the religious people of Rome had refused to even acknowledge GOD as one of their many gods. They had turned their backs on the one true living God and worshiped handmade idols. Paul explained that as a result of their idolatry, every part of their lives had become corrupt and vile.

Paul then told the Roman Christians that they were not to judge others. To judge others is to condemn yourself (Romans 2:1). Christians are to love others out of their brokenness and into the healing wholeness that is found in Jesus Christ.

The Greek word Paul used, that has been translated in our Bibles as “natural/unnatural”, relates to that which is against one’s own inherent nature (I.e., heterosexuals engaging in homosexual acts). It was also related to Paul’s concept of what was culturally acceptable. The same Greek word is used in I Cor. 11:14-15 in reference to correct hair length for men and women and in Gal. 2:15 in reference to Jews and Gentiles who were such by “nature.” Paul emphasized that IDOLATRY (not homosexuality) was the evil which resulted in temple prostitution, sadomasochism, and lack of regard for others.

Look for yourself: (quoted from the New Living Translation)

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 Don’t you know that those who do wrong will have no share in the Kingdom of God? Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, who are idol worshipers, adulterers, male prostitutes, homosexuals, thieves, greedy people, drunkards, abusers, and swindlers — none of these will have a share in the Kingdom of God.

1 Timothy 1:7-11 We know these laws are good when they are used as God intended. But they were not made for people who do what is right. They are for people who are disobedient and rebellious, who are ungodly and sinful, who consider nothing sacred and defile what is holy, who murder their father or mother or other people. These laws are for people who are sexually immoral, for homosexuals and slave traders, for liars and oath breakers, and for those who do anything else that contradicts the right teaching that comes from the glorious Good News entrusted to me by our blessed God.

Romans 1:26-27 That is why God abandoned them to their shameful desires. Even the women turned against the natural way to have sex and instead indulged in sex with each other. And the men, instead of having normal sexual relationships with women, burned with lust for each other. Men did shameful things with other men and, as a result, suffered within themselves the penalty they so richly deserved.

What should my attitude be towards homosexuals? Again let the Bible speak:

Luke 6:27-28 “But if you are willing to listen, I say, love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you. Pray for the happiness of those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you.

Gal 6:10 Whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone, especially to our Christian brothers and sisters.

1 Thess 5:14-15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.

Rom 13:8 Pay all your debts, except the debt of love for others. You can never finish paying that! If you love your neighbor, you will fulfill all the requirements of God’s law. - NLT

That’s what the Bible says…

Answer #8

What Corinthians 6:9-11 really means - not about homosexuality

I Corinthians 6:9-11 Let us examine that very closely.

Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither the immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate [malakoi], nor homosexual offenders [arsenokoites], nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God.

First of all, before we address this line, let us consider one thing. Supposedly taken from a 2000+ year old book, understand that the word “homosexual” was not coined until 1869 by Austrian-born novelist Karl-Maria Kertbeny. So how it happens to be included in a true reading of the particular biblical passage should make you ponder how accurate the interpretation actually is. So man changing the words of the Bible to conveniently spread hate? I think so.

Now onto the interpretation, I’ve included the original Greek words as well where it’s relevant.

Paul was attempting to educate the new Christians in Corinth as to what Godly living was all about. In verses 9-10, he listed ways of living that were not compatible with a Christ-centered life. In verse 11, Paul reminded them that they had been saved out of those destructive ways. There are two Greek words in I Corinthians 6:9, which sometimes are translated with a homosexual connotation.

First word, “malakoi” or “malakos” - it literally means soft or mushy; it can mean spineless, wishy-washy or without backbone. “Malakoi” was used four other times in the New Testament and it always meant “soft.” The context of I Corinthians seems to imply a moral softness or decadence, a failure to stand up for what is right and godly. It is significant that for several hundred years there was no sexual connotation assigned to this word.

Second word, “arsenokoitai” or “arsenokoites” - it literally means, “males having sex.” Early commentaries on I Corinthians related “arsenokoitai” to male temple prostitutes and to men having sex with boys. (Idolatrous prostitution and pedophilia are always wrong for those seeking to honor God.)

Homosexual relationships were known in the Greco-Roman culture of Paul’s day. The Greek word commonly used in reference to adult male same sex partners was “arrenokoites.” Paul did not use this word. Instead, he created his own, “arsenokoitai.” If Paul had intended to condemn all adult male same sex partners, he would have used the common word for it.

Answer #9

Here’s what I found in research:

It’s an abomination to God. He said this not once, not twice, but several times…and it wasn’t all in one breath, but was spread out over 1,500 years. In the beginning, God created man and then He created a woman to be man’s helpmate. I imagine that if God had thought homosexuality was okay, then he would have created another man…or just two women. But He didn’t, so that’s the beginning. When God gave the Law to Moses, He was very clear about the fact that if two (of the same sex) lie together, or “know” each other as man knows a woman, then those two were to be put to death, because “it is an abomination to God.” God also destroyed the cities of the plains (Sodom and Gomorrah and a couple of others) because of their proclivity to homosexual behavior. The men of Sodom even tried to seduce the angels that were sent! (Sounds like San Francisco.)

About 1,500 years later, God spoke through the Apostle Paul to re-affirm that those who practice homosexuality “shall not enter the Kingdom of Heaven.” Many argue that times have changed and we need to become modernized in our thinking. But the fact is that God is the rock. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Therefore, we can easily conclude that He has not changed His mind. Homosexuality is still an abomination to Him.

Now this does NOT mean that God doesn’t love homosexuals. He does, and He wants them to REPENT (turn away) from that which is NOT pleasing in His sight. Can homosexuals be saved? Yes, emphatically yes…IF they will repent (turn away) from that which is wrong. It isn’t the sinner that is hated; it is what he or she does (the sin). Is there such a thing as a Christian homosexual? No. You can either be a Christian, or you can be a homosexual.

“If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood [shall be] upon them” (Lev. 20:13).

“For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet” (Rom. 1:26-27)

Answer #10

What Leviticus really says when interpreted properly:

Leviticus 18:22: “You shall not lie with a male as those who lie with a female; it is an abomination.”

Leviticus 20:13: “If a man lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination and they shall surely be put to death.”

Both of these verses refer to heterosexuals who participated in fertility rituals in order to guarantee good crops and healthy flocks, not homosexuals, there is absolutely no mention of sexual orientation or homosexuality. Also, the word abomination was used for anything that was considered to be religiously unclean or dealing with any type idol worship.

The Hebrew word “toevah” was used in Leviticus 18:22 and Leviticus 20:13. “Toevah” has been translated in our Bibles as “abomination” or “detestable”. The “toevah” was used throughout the Old Testament for activity involving ethnic contamination and religious idolatry. “Toevah” refers to things that were ritually unclean - like eating pork.

It is significant that another Hebrew word, “zimah,” also translated “abomination,” which means intrinsic evil or evil by its very nature, was not used in Leviticus 18:22, or Leviticus 20:13.

It is also significant that female homosexual relationships are not mentioned in the old testament. That’s because they aren’t talking about sexual orientation, they are talking about idolatrous practices.

“In the beginning, God created man and then He created a woman to be man’s helpmate. I imagine that if God had thought homosexuality was okay, then he would have created another man…or just two women. But He didn’t, so that’s the beginning.”

Clearly if god had thought telephones were okay, he would’ve created them with telephones, too. Seriously, this has to be the most absurd justification against homosexuality ever. The reason the genesis creation myth involves a man and a woman should be so obvious it goes without saying.

“About 1,500 years later, God spoke through the Apostle Paul to re-affirm that those who practice homosexuality “shall not enter the Kingdom of Heaven.” Many argue that times have changed and we need to become modernized in our thinking. But the fact is that God is the rock. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Therefore, we can easily conclude that He has not changed His mind. Homosexuality is still an abomination to Him.”

Yes, because there’s not a single contradiction or case of god changing his mind in the bible. cough Moses and the flood cough Jesus cough

“Now this does NOT mean that God doesn’t love homosexuals. He does, and He wants them to REPENT (turn away) from that which is NOT pleasing in His sight. Can homosexuals be saved? Yes, emphatically yes…IF they will repent (turn away) from that which is wrong. It isn’t the sinner that is hated; it is what he or she does (the sin).”

Pretty cruel to create people with biologically wired urges to be attracted to the same sex, then tell them they must not act on them, isn’t it?

Answer #12

yeah it does say it..but the bible was written by human not god.those are things humans think is wrong.I dont think god doess.my brother is gay,and I dont believe hes going to hell just beacause he isnt straight..you go to hell for SINS,is being yourself a sin? no(:

Answer #13

It is only among males to be, females are fine. The reason why it’s a sin is because one of the males have to “degrade” their selves to female standards, quite arrogant, no? But hey, it was written in a time in which females were lower than men. But hey, as iamthebest stated, the bible was written by MAN in the 1700’s. Bits & pieces were taken from varies books & through the years parts of the bible has been taken out.

Answer #14

Oh, Jeez… I am curious about the question myself. Does anyone have a passage that they can refer to or proof of homosexuality (not just sodomites) being “wrong”. I am just curious if the discussion over gay marriage is really a biblical one or if it grew from prejudice around religious groups.

Answer #15

Yes it does, somewhere in that not so mighty book. But ehh don’t worrie about it. The book is aload of bollocks.

Answer #16

Yes it does, as amblessed explained.

That’s not why so many Christians oppose homosexuality though, if you want my opinion. The Bible says that eating shrimp is an abomination. It says that slavery is permissible, unless the person you’re enslaving is from your tribe, in which case they should be released after seven years. It says that disobedience to one’s parents should be punished with death. It says that homosexuality should be punished with death, for that matter, yet none of these rules are followed.

You don’t see Christians following these rules because they don’t use the Bible as the sole basis of their moral code; they include some other source as part of their basis for right and wrong. That they don’t follow the teachings of the Bible (at least not literally) suggests that whatever this other source is, it is given more authority than the rules of the Bible. What it comes down to is Christians using their own judgment, which is based on their upbringing combined with social norms and laws, to interpret the Bible and decide which parts are valid, and which parts were written for the people of the time, which were meant as metaphor or allegory, which were not divinely inspired, etc.

I’m not trying to say that there’s anything wrong or hypocritical about this practice. I respect the believers who constantly agonize over and search for what is right rather than accepting another person’s interpretation wholesale. What I don’t respect are the people who are hypocritically using the Bible as a double standard: explaining their valid reasoning as to why slavery is wrong, while at the same time pointing out that homosexuality is wrong according to the Bible and that’s that. These people interpret the Bible when it runs contrary to their opinions, and at the same time set it up as uninterpretable when it aligns with their prejudices

The truth is, the Bible provides us with near-limitless interpretations, and the absolute rules people extract from it say more about their own morality than any that could have been given by God.

Answer #17

Yeah, it does… I don’t think that there is anything wrong with being homosexual, though… If they love each other, it shouldn’t matter whether they are male or female.

For the people who wanted to know where it is && what it says, here you go::

Lev. 18:22, “You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination.” Lev. 20:13, “If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltness is upon them” 1 Cor. 6:9-10, “Or do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, shall inherit the kingdom of God.” Rom. 1:26-28, “For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, 27and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. 28And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper.”

It makes me irritated just reading those verses… >.<

Answer #18

Ok folks…no pole to pole or whole to whole, but pole to whole…I do believe this the way GOD intended it to be, the Bible tells me so. But, I am a sinner just like every other human ever born. We will answer for our sins on an individual basis. I do not have the right to condem someone for what they choose to do. We should love everyone equally & understand that we are not the judge. What goes on between you & GOD is your business. I am completely straight & married, & I do not support the gay community, but I have friends that are gay & I love them regardless. :)

Answer #19

I find it hard to believe that God does not condemn. He knows us before we are born yet he doesn’t do anything to change who we are.He creates us. So those born gay, which it’s not their fault, wouldn’t that me condemned. That like an abusive parent making their child so something that they shall punish them later on for. Or making their child something they will disown in the future. A lot of your ordinal Christians actually did believe in being condemned though they would tell people to have faith & repent, etc, so mass chaos didn’t break out. A lot of experts on the bible will tell you the same thing.

Answer #20

Yes, you will find anti-gay passages in the Bible. But really, why should you care?

The Bible also says:

  • that disobedient children should be stoned to death
  • that a woman who is raped but failes to scream loudly enough should be killed
  • people who work on the Sabbath should be killed
  • that slaveowners who beat their slaves to death deserve no punishment, because the loss of the slave is punishment enough, and on and on.

The Bible is a book of nonsense written by brutal primitive men. Ignore it.
