A metaphor is a rhetorical device that something essentially is something else. A simile is a rhetorical device that says something is like something else.
Metaphor: A day without looking in the dictionary is a day wasted. Simile: Politics is like a cesspool of greed and avarice.
Similes compare two things using "like" or a similar term. Metaphors don't.... Simile: Life is like a box of chocolates. Metaphor: Life is a box of chocolates.
