There's actually no such thing as "regular" cherries - all cherries have a name, and their differing characteristics are mainly based on the area in which they grow. However, by "regular" I assume you mean red cherries? Those are better in pies, as they can be fairly tart, while black cherries are sweet for eating right off the stem.
It's a different plant sort. Like white and red currants. Or like Orange and yellow carrots. Or like green and red apples. They grow on a different tree.
Black cherries tend to be sweeter and larger than the other ones.
I think reg cherries are bit more on the semi sour side where as in black cherries there is more sweetness! :)
Mmmmm Cherries!! Def the black ones are sweeter! and the red/yellowish ones are sour.
I shall pick some up :D next time I go to the supermarket... which is never :(
