How does your body replicate the rollercoaster feeling when you aren't actually on one?

I had a dream last night involving a rollercoaster and somehow my body actually felt like I was on a rollercoaster, like that feeling when you go upside down etc. I’d always figured that you get that feeling because of the moment of inertia or spacial disorientation or something when you’re actually on a rollercoaster or theme park ride. So how did I feel it in my sleep?

Answer #1

I can’t answer accurately. But I believe it has something to do with how your mind perceives gravity. Something similar happens when you jump on a trampoline and then get off.

Answer #2

Hmm im not sure but i get the same when im in bed after i’ve been on the trampoline or swimming in big waves…

Answer #3

According to what I’ve read dreams are nothing like we remember them; dreams are basically a series of images and we fill in the gaps and details according to our knowledge and experiences. If you dream you are on a roller coaster you will simply have some mental images of roller-coasters and you will substitute how you remember real roller-coasters felt as you recall your dream.

Answer #4

You’re speaking of the subjective vertigo after getting off a ride or on the ride home. For rollercoasters, it’s caused by imflamation of the inner ear. The movement rushes blood to the ears, and they remain imflamed for a while.

Wow that’s really interesting. Thanks for the answer!
