Will this dye lighten my hair the way I want?

I used a dark brown dye yesterday to dye my hair which was a light brown, instead of turning a dark brown, it went pitch black and I don’t like it all that too much, I have another hair dye here that’s a light brown by the same make and I was wondering if it’d be safe to use that over my black to try and just lighten it a bit, even if it doesn’t show a lot I don’t mind, as long as it’s not pitch black, but I read on other boards that it can sometimes go orange, please help, as I’ve got to go back to college tomorrow!!

I’ve had trouble with this before. I had dyed my hair black for over 3 years and only recently I tried getting rid of the black. I had dyed a lighter colour over the top but it only coloured the roots. So I had to do the drastic and bleach my hair. I don’t recommend this as the bleach removes dark colour but leaves your hair with a warm shade such as orange, ginger, auburn…etc. My hair turned out ginger and I tried changing it with another dye but it only dyed my roots ginger!!!

So I suggest you see a hairdresser or wash your hair regularly to reduce the colour. If it’s temporary then it shouldn’t be a problem. It’ll fade after 6 weeks. =]

A lot of browns go on very dark at first and take about a week or two to lighten up after several shampoos. Just wash it often. I hear people put laundry detegent and Tide on their hair but I wouldn’t do that. Those are harsh soaps than can really strip your hair of vital nurtrients.

Once you dye your hair a darker color, you can’t just put a lighter hair dye over it. It won’t lighten that way. Keep shampooing it and if after a couple of weeks, it’s still too dark, the only way to lighten the hair again is to bleach it or strip it, then add the desired color.

Just work it–wear it tied back or something for a few days until it lightens up.

Tip for the future–do not experiment with dyes before big days.Do not experiment with dyes without a professional, really. It’s not just a matter of picking a box with a picture–they’re deceptive and designed only to make money. Just look at this board–there are literally dozens of people panicked about things not turning out the way they wanted or on the box.

Good luck.

In the walmart aisle they have a dye remover, and Its like only 7 bucks! I found this relieving. Though the post above this is accurate i have found that hair dressers have screwed up my color 30 times worse than i have ever screwed mine up. Ive done it all but im new at it. Over the last year ive realized that ive done everything bad to my hair, its gone from patchy red, to brillant burnette (natural) to pitch black, to this wonderful blondish color and it always can change with in an hour from bad to good or the other way. If it makes you feel any better remember supermodels even scorch, dye, curl, and straighten their hair, all in one day! Just if you get the color you want beware of dying your entire head to die the roots, recently i have found that it just gives ya that awful black color, and yeah mine didnt wash out. Thank you lord (seriously) for the hair dye remover. Hope this helps
