back pain when breathing

when I take a deep breathe in (usually when im sitting down) my right side of my back (near the ribcage) hurts a bit and is uncomfortable. it doesnt cause me that much pain but its just an uncomfortable feeling. could it have been the way I slept?? or what could it be??

Answer #1

That happened to me, I thought it was because of the way I slept and it kept getting worse so I went to the hospital and it ended up being a bad blood infection due to a untreated bladder infection. So if it keeps up be sure to go get it checked because it not it will get worse, I was hospitalized for 4 days because I ignored it.

well it SEEMS like you are describing a sensation most people will experience at some point in their lives. when you inhale deeply you get a pain, like a sharp pain, right ? it’s a muscular pain, it’ll go away in a few days. if not, definitely see a doctor. it has happened to me plenty of times, I went to the hospital for it once and they told me it was normal, and to slow down on my exercising.

I have experienced the same pain in the past. Around an year back it erupted in moderate degree on left front of ribcage. After many tests to rule out a cardiac condition, and X-Rays and ultrasound to check for other ailments, the doc concluded it to be muscular spasms. It was present in lesser intensity at left back as well as right side too. Rest and application of a heat balm helped ease it out in about a weeks time. One noticeable fact was that, me having been a regular smoker at the time, when inhaling the smoke the palpitation used to become pronounced. I assumed that probably years of smoking is catching up with the lungs, and they have been unnoticeably affected to an extent that they are beginning to give warning signals. Have cut it down drastically since, only occasionally and not everyday either.

The same pain returned a fortnight back. Had a few successive cigarettes with drinks in the evening, and in the morning the pain was back. It was mainly on right back. Again the chest X-Ray is clear. Have refrained from smoking for 15 days now, and it is gradually fading now. The main pain that was on right back is almost gone, but there are new milder areas of oain on left side and left back, though these too are improving.

Have been reasonably fit always, recently took release from the Indian Army after 12 years of service. Unable to explain this condition. Maybe it is as someone suggested, the lining between the lungs and the ribs has been affected due to loss of lubricance or something.

I can’t say for sure, as I’m not a doctor, but I get sharp pain in my ribcage often. what’s causing it (for me) is the thinning of the lubricating substance between the lungs and the ribs, causing the lung to rub against the ribcage. It feels like a sharp pain and is at it’s worst when I breathe in.

Does that sound anything like what you’re experiencing?

At any rate, if it continues you should see your doctor.

I am experiencing back pain near the center of my back, but on the right side when I btake a deep breath. What could it be and should I seek proffessional help?
