aspartame and harming u

Is aspartame in diet soda really that bad?

Answer #1

It is an artificial sweetner that was not approved by the FDA for some time because of a trial that resulted in lab rats getting cancer, these could not be replicated. And a study by an outside agency addressed the possibilities of it causing brain cancer.

The FDA finally approved it. However,

“Upon ingestion, aspartame breaks down into several residual chemicals, including aspartic acid, phenylalanine, methanol, and further breakdown products including formaldehyde,[16] formic acid, and a diketopiperazine. There is controversy surrounding the rate of breakdown into these various products and the effects that they have on those that consume aspartame-sweetened foods.

The naturally-occurring essential amino acid phenylalanine is a health hazard to those born with phenylketonuria (PKU), a rare inherited disease that prevents phenylalanine from being properly metabolized. “

Fairly safe in the test-tube.. but in the stomach, it interacts with other chemicals, like nitrites that are in preserved meats, like pepperoni… to create “nitrosated molecules.”

(So don’t drink your diet coke while eating pepperoni pizza.)

“We have particularly concerned that aspartame might react in the stomach with nitrites present in foods and be converted to a nitrosated molecule” he recalls.

“We were aware of published studies showing that certain nitrosated molecules can enter the central nervous system and cause brain tumors in laboratory animals.

These studies showed that brain tumors develop fairly rapidly following exposure of an adult animal to the nitrosated molecules or after a long delay interval if a fetus is exposed during pregnancy.”
