Mostly it is because the news programs are into fear-mongering. The more they scream about how terrible everything is, the higher their ratings. Look at the 'balloon boy' story - a local concern that turned into a non story, but networks all over are giving it tons of airtime.
Fox is particularly bad at fear mongering, but no network is blameless.
Yes, there are bad things and bad people in this world, but they are in far, far, far outnumbered by people who want to do good things, or who just want to be left alone.
I blame it on our media. There are so many news stories about awful things that happen to kids. We see all these stories and believe that danger lurks for our children around every corner. We see the victims but not the millions of kids who aren't attacked. With our mindset every stranger is a potential murderer or pedophile instead of a new person to meet.
I actually walked by myself to Kindergarten. The school was only a few blocks from our home but I can't imagine any parents allowing their kids to do this today. Ever since I was 10 I can remember riding bikes with friends all over the place with no way for our parents to reach us for hours at a time (before mobile phones). I'd have to be home for dinner and by dark but other than that I was free.
I doubt that parents will ever go back to the way things used to be but I think we have lost a lot going from a society that trusts people until they prove themselves unworthy to a society that is suspicious of people until they prove themselves trustworthy.
Well for a start theres lots going on in the world and they want to keep you safe like look what happened to maddeline she was left in the hotel room and then taken cause they werent looking after her at that time. Akso there lots of bad people in this world trying to steal hurt children so keep a look out and remember to keep safe.
