Google seems the best and has been for a long time. The first search engine I used was webcrawler. There is still a www.webcrawler.com... but it seems to be a meta-search engine now. The next one I latched onto was altavista which was the fastest and most thorough for a long time. Since 2000 or so google was it.

As I understand it google raises the pagescore of companies who pay them so the company's links will be listed above competitors. I would like to find a search engine with google's breadth that doesn't do this.
