How can i help my new puppy adjust?

Bear, Romeo, and Ruby Asked by gvellianitis over 2 years ago, 1 answer.

I'm getting a 5 month old Chihuahua, and I was just wondering if anyone can give me an idea, how long it would usually take for a puppy that age, to adjust to a new home and environment? With him being 5 months old, will it be harder for him to adjust?...

What can I do to make this transitions the least traumatic and less stressful for him? Any any advice is greatly appreciated!!! Sorry there's more than 1 question, but that's the only way I could word it!!!

Hi,

Leaving her mother and littermates will probably bring about some form of separation anxiety. However, this can be greatly diminished if you plan your schedules so that you are with the puppy constantly for the first 3 to 4 days.

Keep the puppy involved with plenty of attention from children and other family members through every one of his waking moments. When you are not with the puppy, he should be eating, sleeping, or going to the bathroom. You will be amazed how time spent in this manner will speed up the housebreaking process.

Hopefully, where you acquired the puppy will give instructions on what he has been eating. It is a good idea to continue feeding the same type and brand of food for at least a few days. If you must switch his food, do it gradually--a sudden change in food will cause stomach upset and diarrhea.

Good luck, and have fun!
