I'm going throw the same thing, I wne t to a class and so far its helping me exersize about 30 minutes a day and eat heathier: porstion control. and try writing down what you eat every day for about a month so you can see what your eating caloie count.
For a normal, healthy metabolism, B vitamins, essential fatty acids and iron are essential. These are all found in whole grains, nuts, beans and other seeds. You can also try whole grain foods, unprocessed oils (like salad dressing and cooking oil), bran flakes, etc. Avoid hydrogenated oils since this converts them to solid fat and if they contain trans-fatty acids they may also be difficult for the body to process.
Excess protein (beyond what you need) and saturated fat (usually from meat) tend to be sources of calories that don't contain other substances that help your metabolism. So eating less meat helps too. In theory excess unsaturated fat (oil) would also get converted into saturated fat (solid fat), but unlike protein most people get too little oil not too much.
You can count calories but I don't do it myself. Last time I did was was a starving college student trying to find the foods with the most calories so I could get enough to eat. I burn through them pretty fast.
