Excerpt from a book commenting on Time and Speed of Light, I’ll begin with part of Einstein’s “Theory of Relativity.” One of the things this theory states is that “time” is relative to ones motion and also to the amount of gravity exerted on one. This is the theory everyone has heard. It says that the faster you travel, the more time slows for the traveler. This is true but only a part of the story. What does this mean? Let me give you an example. This is slightly different but it represents a good example of two people seeing the same thing but with two different perspective to what their seeing. It was written by Steven Hawkings in his book “ A Briefer history of Time.” It is a good analogy of where you’re thinking has to go to understand what I’ll be talking about in a few paragraphs so I’ll use it again and thank the original writer of it. So 13thclam, you nailed it. Faster you go the slower time passes for you
arachnid,
Go read up on the Theory of Relativity. The faster you go the more time is slowed. The question was just that how do I slow down time... well traveling at near speed of light will do just that.
And as to your argument the rest of the universe will appear to be flashing by at high speed... and it wouldn't appear that way if you sent the rest of the universe away at near speed of light as suggested in your first argument?
You nailed it... the question was how do I slow down time... the only way that can be done in our current knowledge is for the person who wants time to slow-travel at near light speed.
seao2florida: I'd suggest you instead re-read the question: is there any way to slow down time? LIFE IS GOING BY TOO FAST :'(. Accelerating to near the speed of light wouldn't cause life to go by any slower, it'd cause it to go by _faster_. Time slows for the traveller, whereas what the questioner was asking about was slowing time for _Everyone_else_.
IS THERE ANY WAY TO SLOW DOWN TIME? is a question. Life is going by too fast. Is a statement. And as I read the title box above this answer box It says Answer this Question: Is there a way to slow down time?
So I did go back and re-read the question as you suggested. The answer to the QUESTION is travel at near light speed is the only way to slow down time.
Now as I suggested you might go read the Theory of Relativity.
Answer this Question: "Is there a way to slow down time?"
