Nothing.
They are both genres of music, and fad fashions that some people like to take part of, to make them feel tough.

Labels hurt people, you shouldn't use them.
It doesn't matter the difference between the two.

Ugh.
Everyone who has answered so far is incorrect.

Both goth and emo are styles of music.

Fans of either genre do not necessarily cut themselves, and are not necessarily depressed. They may do either, just as a fan of any other sort of music may do either.

Gothic rock music is NOT Manson, NIN, or heavy metal. It is not MCR or Evanescence. Those groups are not goth AT ALL.

For real gothic rock music, explore:
Sisters of Mercy.
Bauhaus.
Siouxsie and the Banshees.
Sex Gang Children.
Specimen.
Cure.

First, calling you incorrect is not rude, as I was tactful about it, and you are in fact incorrect.
What's more, while there are no laws about what is goth and what isn't, I've been involved in the scene for years, and know many goths who were around when the movement started--there is a commonly accepted idea of goth, and I presented it.

As for bands not considering themselves goth--that doesn't matter. If your music has gothic elements, but you don't see it, that doesn't mean those elements aren't present.

Lastly, while goth is a style of architecture, that has no relevance to the gothic subcultural movement.
No, goth is not a style of clothing, as you can be completely goth and wear all pink and white if you want.

Everyone except underwaterophelia is wrong...but ...

Emo - style of music also classified as alternative (depends were you go) emotional , screamo music...like mcr, hawthorne heights, afi (apparently).Tight skinny jeans, emo fringe (I hate describing us like this cause its not all of us) just think emotional...

Goth - Macabre , has many meanings was years ago a dark style or a somewhat celtic one (churches-paintings)..goth is more of a stly than a music but it can be both but usually its under the metal section (they dont have goth sections were I am so yeah)...black all black clothes, latex, studded stuff...dark sort of feel to them...etc metal bands well it depends there are a few types one is the Sisters of Mercy.
Bauhaus.
Siouxsie and the Banshees.
Sex Gang Children.
Specimen.
Cure.

ok, goth is a genre of music, clothes, aditude, lifestyle, and architect. mostly goths where black, dark purple, dark green, or blood red\dark red. Emo's wear more tight pants, band shirts, black, and some brighter colors. Emo has a kind of flippy hair and goths don't usually wear that hairstyle as much. plus, goth clothes are more fishnet, velvet, and lace, plus other fabrics. so, there's a difference.

I hate labels.

Don't yell at me for my reply, I'm not trying to stereotype people!!! if you don't agree with me keep it 2 urself, I don't really care.
