Future bonding with grandparents

My daughter is on drugs and homeless. The one year old baby girl is in a foster home. We are applying for de facto parenting and guardianship. When we receive permission, how slowly should we go in bringing the child back into our home? The baby has been in the foster home for about two months at this time. What are the chances that she may remember us-grandpa and grandma? Please answer me and give any advice that you think would be helpful. Thank you, Ed

Answer #1

I wouldn’t do it gradually at all, move your grandaughter back in straight away. People think children are stupid but they are far from it, she WILL remember you depending on how much time you spent with her prior to her going on into care, Good luck X

Answer #2

I agree, spend as much time with the child as possible. Move them into your home and IMMEDIATLY begin theadvancements as the childs parents, since that’s what you are ! After being in foster care for 2 months it will be a little more difficult but please remember that children, espically young ones, live, learn and forget VERY quickly, so mark your impressions now !

Answer #3

If you are unsure, can you stay overnight with the foster parents and learn her routine? What she does before bed, what foods she likes, how they set limits, then the move will be as painless as possible.

For the actual move I think doing quickly and matter of factly would be best. Be ready for lots of tears and acting out, and respond with hugs and cuddles. For any child a family that loves her is better than foster care. Congratulations on your decision.

Bond Bond Bond. Don’t let too much time go by. You only have a few more years before all the good positive effects of bonding and gaining trust don’t work so well anymore. Check drspock.com for more about babys attachment or read up on john Bowlby. Kid needs parents no matter what name they go by.
