Are depression medications healthy emotionally?

Are anti-depressants really all that healthy for emotions? I am feeling sort of depressed a lot of the time and wondering if medication is a good option. I'm worried it would just change how I feel. that would mean my emotions were being changed by a drug and not true desires and feelings.

Dear gothgrl,
If you are feeling depressed now is the time to see a doctor. He may prescribe some medication for you but you should also do this in conjunction with counselling. Most medications sort our thoughts so we can concentrate and better retain info and relax but counselling helps us to manage our lives and make us realize why we are depressed in the first place. So make a smart choice and don't do one without the other.
Sue...good luck

Yeah, have a doctor evaluate your problem. You may not need medications. It sounds to me like you have a philosophical aversion to taking phychotropic drugs. Many people feel this way. If your Dr. perscribes drugs it will be to regulate brain chemestery that is out of whack. My mother-in-law is obesessive compulsive. Without medication her life is miserable; she spends every waking moment cleaning and organizing; on meds she can laugh when someone tracks mud across a white carpet. I also have a step-daughter who on medication is a full time college student who works part time; off medication she gets suicidal and stays in bed for weeks at a time. In both my mother-in-law and my step-daughter's cases their illness is not who they are; it is when they are well when they are who they really are.
