Yes... it remains to this day, one of THE BEST forms of exercise. It's a works your entire body, with ZERO impact, so there's virtually no joint damage, soreness, etc. afterwards.

As far as losing weight, well, the SCALE isn't really a good way to measure progress... 'inches' is.

Simply a Rose to brighten your day,
And maybe lessen the cares in your way;
And also, too, to help you to know,
That in knowing you, many others grow!

Yes, with proper eating habits.

Ok, I am going to throw this out there cause noone else really seems like they are going to. Unless you are really really overweight, you are not going to lose 15 pounds in 2-3 weeks. Most Dr.s will say that for an average person its not healthy to lose more than 2 pounds every week.

I will tell you what I tell everyone else who wants to drop weight fast though. The 3 keys I go by are.
Calorie cycling. (this is eating less than your maintain weight for 3 days then eating your maintain weight on the 4th day. You should, however, eat 5 times a day.l This helps up you metabolism.)

Weight training. One of the best ways to burn calories for guys and girls. It continues to burn calories long after the exercising is done and women wont bulk up like guys so don't be afraid to do it.

HIITs or High Intensity Interval Training. You can google lots of information on this. Basically when you do your cardio you do in intervals of about 30-90 seconds going as hard as you can and then 60-90 seconds of very slow rested state. Then repeat. When I do it I usually do wind sprints, but you could do it with swimming. These also continue to burn calories after you have finished. Studies have shown it can up your metabolism for a 24hr period.

One last bit of advice, watch what you eat. Stay away from trans and saturated fats, other fats are good for you though. Trade in refined grains for whole grains (dont cut carbs you need them). Eat lots of protein. And read the labels to stay away from High fructose corn syrup (this is in everything including most bread. I dare everyone reading this to check their bread at home).
