No, most dogs do not bite their owners.

Some dogs playfully mouth their owners but even this should be discouraged.

A dog that bites its owner sees itself as an equal. Biiting and even playful mouthing are signs of agression.

In this case the owner should exert their authority and make the dog respect them as alpha. Every time the dog bites or mouths hold its mouth closed with your hand and with a firm authoritative voice say 'no!'

Other things to make a dog recognise you as alpha is not letting them get on beds or furniture (keep them below you). When giving treats always make them earn them by sitting, shaking hands, or other tricks. If you make them earn their treats they will view you as master; if they get treats for nothing they will see themselves as master.

Believe it or not I had to go to a dog psychologist for my dog's behavior. Even though he was house trained and has a doggy door he sometimes peed on our carpets and he also sometimes snapped at or mouthed us and visiting kids. The psychologist explained that our dog saw itself as one of the adults and leaders of his pack (our family). When we lowered his rank in the pack his behavior instantly improved.

No. I have had four dogs and never been bitten! Dogs must be trained properly right from day one. All puppies will attempt to chew/nip hands and MUST be trained that this is not acceptable.

I hope not on purpose. Discourage mouthing your human hand and substitute with other chewable objects during the early stages. Avoid the tug of war games with objects in the house and that belong to you ( like shoes, gloves, and towels)which will encourge biting behaviors in play that can transform themselves to the human body parts that are holdng these objects. Say NO firmly if the dogs teeth even graze your hand and do not continue playing and remove the object from sight. With our puppy ,(who is now a 95 lb. Lab) we stopped his natural instinct to grab and clamp down on things by being consistent with everything he would put in his mouth. If he jumped at an object like his leash, to bite it, we would correct him immediately and tell him to drop it. If it became a tug of war, we would end that behavior by removing the object as quickly and forcefully as possible. From time to time we would give his a time out period in his crate. Eventually he became less willfull and understood that he should never show teeth or growl at the master. With patience, consistency, and rewards for the good behaviours, we no longer have to worry about his mouthing or biting and he accepts our control and rewards for good behavior in other ways as well. After nearly 3 months of daily correction, our 10 month old Lab can be trusted with our neighborhood dogs and people. It seemed as if that day would never come at times!

I would strongly recommend puppy and intermediate training at your local pet center as well, so your dog knows how to sit, stay, wait and lie down. These simple controls come in handy in other aspects of the pets manners and socialization. We feel we can take our Lab everywhere now and he has truly become a member of the family and not a loose cannon!
