Why not use the excess trailers in Haiti?

There were thousands of excess trailers after the hurricane hit New Orleans. Why not use them in Haiti where they are needed? They could be shipped and arrive in a few days. Government authorities do not seem to have much between the ears if this isn’t used.

Answer #1

It’s one thing to demean the government for what they are (or aren’t) doing, but you fail to understand the reasons behind it.

Do you want to foot the bill for the cost of shipping all those trailers? As a taxpayer, that’s precisely where the money would come from - your pocket.

Things certainly look different when they become your responsibility, don’t they?

*It’s one thing to demean the government for what they are (or aren’t) doing, but you fail to understand the reasons behind it.

One reason behind it may be that the majority of trailers have been found to have high formaldehyde levels, produced by formaldehyde emissions from manufactured materials used in construction of the trailers. Residents have reported breathing difficulties, persistent flu-like symptoms, eye irritation, and nosebleeds. Tests on a number of FEMA trailers by the Sierra Club showed some 83% had levels of formaldehyde in the indoor air at levels above the EPA recommended limit.

In July 2008, researches conducting a federally-funded analysis reported that the toxic levels of formaldehyde in the trailers probably resulted from faulty construction practices and the use of substandard building materials.

Why pass our problems to others. They are suffering enough without developing US sponsored medical problems.

No, things DON’T look differently. I want to live in a world where we take care of each other. Where those of us that ‘have’ give freely and happily to those that ‘have not’.

I for one see nothing differently when I see people suffering and have no problems with my tax dollars being used to help any victims of disasters like this. I already make donations on my own. I hope you all do too.

As far as the trailers, as Utopia already stated, they are unfit for anyone to use. But even if they were, getting them there is not so easy. They are facing enormous problems just trying to get food and medical supplies where its needed because the infastructure of the country is in a complete shambles. This was a massive earthquake, many roads are impassable. Trying to bring in thousands of trailers would be impossible, at least right now. I think most people would be happy just to have food, water, medicine and a tent right now.
