Why are boys like rubberbands?

…They can strecth so far away from you and still end up coming back. Me and my ex have been talkin on and off for 2 years now. And I’ve been in love with him for 2 years, but he never knew. Everytime we stop talking I try to get over him, but then smallest amount of communication with him makes me fall right back in love. He was my first boyfriend and I went a whole year thinking about him 24/7(not really but just about everyday). A month ago I figured I was never going to get over him, but leaving him alone and not obsessing over him was going to help me. Then he talked to me last night and I can’t stop thinking about him and remembering the good old days. I love this person so much but the problem is he lives far away from me, so I feel like telling him I love him will be a waste of breathe. What should I do? I can’t even count how many times we’ve been pulled back together after going months or weeks without talking. Do you think it’s meant to be…should I keep holding on to this person(even though I have for the past 2 years and It’s gotten me nowhere)?
