I would argue that there is no counterculture today. Nothing is underground. Thanks to the internet, everything is everywhere, so everything is marketable. Skaters get corporate sponsors, emo and indie songs are popping up on car commercials like crazy. Also, so much has become acceptable in society that just wasn’t before, because everything is so overexposed. I could go on…

I’d like to think the counterculture is everything and everyone indie.

Or everything straight. because it seems like the dirtier and the worse it is, the more popular it becomes.

Its just an observation though. I dont really know.

As I see it things have flipped since the 60’s. Most of what was counterculture in the 60’s is mainstream today while what was mainstream in the 60’s is the counterculture of today.

In the 1960’s counterculture argued for the equality of minorities and women, for multiculturalism, for less strict gender roles,

Today the counterculture argues for a return to America as it was in the 1950’s (or at what they imagine America was in the 1950’s).

While the 1960’s counterculture wore Che T-shirts today’s counterculture wears ones with Glen Beck or a picture of President Obama sporting a Hitler mustache.
