Where do I get a tax code/UK?

I’ve just recently started a new job. I got my first wage slip today and I had to pay tax. I got told I’ll get it back eventually in a tax rebate but do I just wait for it? Does it come in the mail? Do I ask for it? Do I have to tell the council? I don’t understand. I don’t have one of those 45 forms to fill in as this is my first job. I’m only 16 and I thought you had to be 18 to pay tax? I got told this is emergency tax but do I get the emergency tax I got taken off me back? If so, how long will that take?

Miss English, where are you pulling your information out from? I’m sure you are getting mixed up with accumulated annual leave where your employer has to pay you out when you leave or get fired from your job. You do not get your tax back when you leave a job but after a financial year.

Being uneducated DOES NOT MEAN A WORKER IS NOT ENTITLED TO THEIR TAX REBATE omggg that is the most misinformed answer I have ever read on here HOLY COW !!.

With tax, I’m sure England and Australia have similar tax structure, you work, you pay tax irrespective of your age, The government sets a threshold where you can earn below the threshold and you won’t get tax on that full amount, for example $6000 (not an exact figure, I’m using the amount as illustration purposes).

Even though on your payslip, tax is deducted, at the end of the financial year (for us in Oz, financial year is 1 July 2009 - 31st June 2010) when you lodge your tax return, the taxes you paid are given back to you as a rebate. The more you earn, the more you get taxed.

If you have questions, it is best to ring your taxation office directly they will answer most of your questions and give you the tax code you need to fill out the tax form.

If your not in education then you wont get it back, unless they give it back to you when they leave the job

Answer #3

You will either get it back in a few weeks, or when you leave the job.. If your in fulltime education.

I’m not in education, so do I get it in a few weeks? I asked one of the managers and he said he doesn’t know how it works. Should it all come back in a few weeks yes?

Answer #5

But I’m only sixteen D:

How dissapointing.

What you need to do is get a NI number. You receive one automatically when you are 16 but if you are on an emergency tax rate, it sounds like you don’t have one. Details are here on how to apply for one: http://www.funadvice.com/r/3jtr9rop4o

I’m not 100% sure on how the refund for emergency tax works, either they take less later in this year to make up for the higher tax earlier on, or you can apply for a refund at the end of the year. There is more information here: http://www.funadvice.com/r/3jtr9ropab
