when to start the pill?

I have always had quite irregular periods, but in the last year or so they had got worse, where I would not have one for upto 3 or 4 months, then have 1 that lasted 3-4 weeks. so I have been to the doctors a couple of times, and they have decided to put me on the pill to make them regular. I was told to take it on the first day of my period, or whenever as I dont know when it will start. However the day after having my blood test to see if I can go on the pill, my period started, and it has now been going for just over 3 weeks. can I just start taking the pill now? or do I have to wait until it finishes and then start taking it? If it helps, this long period hasnt been ongoing the whole time really, it sort of stops then starts again, I thought it had stopped yesterday bt this morning I found I was on again. please respond a.s.a.p. if you can help. thankyou (my main question is cani start taking the pill while on my period)

Start taking your pill on Sunday. Most birth control packs are recommended that you start them the Sunday after your period starts. Since you have been having a 3 week period, I would wait until this Sunday and take the first pill.

Make sure you use back up birth control (condoms, spermicide, etc.), for the next month if you have sex. It’s recommended to wait a month for it to kick in.

Most likely you can, because your doctor told you to take it “whenever” because you didn’t know when it would start. However, different brands of pills sometimes have different sets of instructions. Best shot is to simply call your doctor on the phone and ask. If your doctor is not available, consult the directions that came with your pills and/or contact your pharmacist. They can usually tell you as well.

I had this similar problem that started when I was about 37 that was accompanied by intense migraines leading to hospitalization. I started on the pill and took it non-stop until this past halloween when I had a hysterectomy. My understanding is you can start taking the pill as long as you have a flow…it’s basically to ensure that you are not pregnant and then starting the pill…go ahead start the pill! Good luck to you!
