What's a nice DSLR camera higher then 15 mega pixels that's affordable?

So im buying a DSLR and i was looking at a canon 550 which is 18 mega pixels i LOVE it and unless i see something else i really like its most likely i wil end up buying it however it is 500 pounds which is 780 dollars I think this is too pricey but it is 18 mega pixels and i doubt i would use it to its full potential. I dont want a very low mega pixel camera but id love to see some more opions. Im mainly interested in sony’s cannons and nikons so if anyone could send me some links it would be greatly appreciated.

You can’t use megapixels as a measure of image quality. Many stunning images have been captured on 6 MP Nikon D70’s. After 6 MP you are past the point of diminishing returns. The most important factor in image quality is skill and technique of the photographer. After that optics and sensor size (physical size rather than number of pixels) are important; once you get past 6MP they hardly matter. Note that SLR cameras were designed around film. To see through the lens required a mirror and screen. In order to have room for the moving mirror in the light box the distance from the lens flange is long. This is the reason the “standard” lens in 35mm is 50mm. Any lens with a shorter focal length than that is actually a projection lens. Ideally the 24x36mm frame would use a normal lens of 43mm and when cropped for 8x10 prints it would be better with a 38mm (which is the reason many 35mm SLR photographers consider the wide angle 35mm lens to be their “normal” lens). With electronic cameras there is no longer a need for a mirror, screen, or large light box to see through the main lens. All that is needed is an electric viewfinder. To take advantage of this a new category of digital camera emerged called EVIL or Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens cameras. Like SLRs these have interchangeable lenses but with the short flange distance lenses can be designed more optimally and with adapters SLR lenses can be used. I just got a Panasonic Lumix DMC-G3 which so far seems awesome. It is smaller than DLSRs and some pros consider it to be on par with DSLR image quality. FWIW it is 16 MP so it fits your pixel criteria as well.
