What does an efc score of 02378 on the fafsa mean?

Answer #1

EFCs are not a “score.” They are meant to be a reflection of the student’s (and his/her family’s) ability to pay for school.

Your Financial Need is calculated by taking your total Cost of Attendance and subtracting your EFC.

Therefore, as long as your school costs are higher than your EFC, you are considered to have “need.”

This is how a student with a $30,000 EFC could arguably still be considered needy at a $40,000/year school and become eligible for a Subsidized Stafford Loan (the limits for which are set by the government and increase as your education progresses: $2,625 for Freshmen, $3,500 for Soph, and $5,500 for other years of undergrad study).

This number also applies to you if you go for a PELL grant.

Your guidance councilor is the person who would be able to fully explain these to you.
