What does 'alas' mean?

Does alas mean unfortunately? And how do you use it in a sentence?

im just typing some words here because fun advice is telling me that there isn’t enough detail in my question

Answer #1

Like ethmer said, but it’s used instead of something like ‘however’, I’ll give you an example.

I like cheese, however, I don’t have any.

I love getting to talk to you, alas, I have to go…

Answer #2

Normally it is used to express sorrow, regret, grief, compassion, or apprehension of danger or evil.
