What does afternoon nap help with?

Well, I actually DO know what it helps with, but the question I wanted to ask is- Do afternoon-nap hours replace night-sleep hours? like- if I nap in the afternoon, is it covering for night-sleep hours? For example- let’s say I sleep 9 hours a day. If I nap for 3 hours in the afternoon, can I sleep 6 hours at night without any damage or difference? (Are there any differences between a 9-hour-sleep a day, and 3-hour-nap and then 6-hour-sleep a day?)

Answer #1

I would say yes. When you sleep like for 3 hours then you tend to get tired lattar in the night making you sllep a little less time at night so I guess it would be the right hours.

Answer #2

The longer time block (9 hour night) allows your body to go through ALL of the REM and other sleep cycles that it NEEDS to restart/revamp/rebuild your body. The little blocks of sleep (3 and 6) do not adequately allow you to do this.

Take a look at new moms. They get to sleep in increments of 2-3 hours. They look like crap. Bags under their eyes, constant headaches, even a yellowish tinge to their skin. They don’t get to sleep enough! Granted, that’s a much more extreme version of what you’re asking, but a 6 hour block followed by a 3 hour nap would not leave you feeling refreshed. You’d be exhausted until you took your nap, then you’d be either super sluggish or pinging after your nap and it’d throw off your night-time sleep.
