How to get knots out of long hair?

My 17 year old sister’s hair is very long and curly and she has let it get into one giant knot ball. It’s even knoted to the roots. She is too scared to go to a salon and get it cut because she’s afraid that all they will do is cut all of her hair off. Does anyone PLEASE have any advice for me. Any is appreciated. Thank you.

Answer #1

Or.. even try brushing it with conditioner in… But I suppose she’s already got the knot out by now =]

xx

Answer #2

Brush it. XD Buy detangling spray..

Answer #3

Detangler. but if it is a tru mess, go to the salon and ask them. tell them that you dont want them to cut it off, but ask their opinion of what products to use on that problem. GOOD LUCK

Answer #4

Yeah I would go to a professional. Go to a salon and tell them youo dont want it all cut off, but you want to get it un-tangled. Just ask them if there is anything they can do about it, or that you can do about it, if they cant.

Answer #9

I have the same problem, what I do is take my brush into the shower with me, and while my hair is wet, I put conditioner in it, and before washing out the conditioner I brush it out. It makes it a little looser and works very well for me- detangler has never worked, nor has brushing it while it’s wet.

Step one - Take out all hair clips, ponytails etc. Cut them out if necessary. Step two - Get in the bath tub. Not the shower. Step three - Wet all hair. Step four - Shampoo hair then rinse it. Step five - Fill your cupped hand with conditioner (Any kind, it doesn’t have to be expensive.) Step six - Put conditioner in to your hair focusing on the knot. Step seven - Leave in for about 5 minutes. Step eight - Take a wide toothed comb and start on the bottom of the knot. Step nine - Work your way up the knot. This will take a while. Try doing it while watching T.V. or listening to the radio. Remember to pull away excess hair as you remove it from the knot. Step ten - Once most of the knot is out rinse hair. Step eleven. - Repeat steps five and six. Step twelve. Brush hair with a brush. HOPE THIS HELPED! (Once I had this problem, I was brushing for 3 hours!)

tell her to wash her hair as soon as she gets in the shower then when she puts the conditioner in to leave in right until she is gonna get out.after that brush it right after she gets out. tell to put her hair in a loose french braid and sleep n it then when she gets up take out the braid and re-brush it p.s. my mom is a hair dresser and i used to ave really long hair and thats what she did for me glad i could help

Answer #12

I have all of these problems but I have really short hair. what I do is I don’t even use conditioner. It hurts, butt have a friend help you. Just take a brush and I use VERY small strokes. It takes a while, but it really works. Hope this helps!!

I have very thick hair and I recently had braids put in and I used braid spray to keep the dandruff from building up and when I took my braids out my hair knotted up really bad and I want to cut it myself but not to short I want to have some length on it how can I do it myself and still have some length to put my hair in a style?

Answer #14

I have the same problem. what I do is just put conditioner in it and if it dosent work then I guess you might have to cut it thats what I had to do like 3 times and let me tell you it suxz I was like crying after I had to cut it lol. its sad to get all of that cut.

Answer #15

I have very long hair too( almost to my bumb). I OFTEN get those kind of knots, and about 3 times a month I go “not agian!”I almost have resorted to getting my hair cut too, but since I don’t want it short and have had long hair since I was 7 (now 43), I NEVER want to do that! I have spent LOTS of money on various detanglers- cheap, and expensive, and most often the “salon “ quality, but I came across one that really only works. And it REALLY works great!! The name of it is “bliss” by a company called Nioxin. I always buy at least 2 bottles of it at a time so I never run out! I also never use a brush when it is wet! This might seem to help get the knots out initially, but this actually damages the hair and destroys the cuticle…leaving it MORE succeptable to further knots! What you should use is a PLASTIC pick - the kind used for negro styles etc.Start by liberally spraying the knot first with the bliss, then start picking at the very bottom of the knot (the end furthest from the root), and slowly pick through the knot until you get it all out!I know this will work for you…let me know how this helps!:-)

Answer #16

Good Luck, but the “cut off the hair” might be the only option. Other than that its going to need professional help, at least go to a neighbor hood salon and ask for an evaluation.
