unruley dog

I have a one year old boxer mix. He is so bad, eats everything..I mean everything, glass bottles, anything wood, metal, fabric, & anything he sees. We can’t keep him inside b/c he is too desctructive. We have a fenced in backyard, but he keeps getting out. So we have been putting him up in a spare bedroom while we are not home. We have had this dog since he was 6 weeks old…it’s not gotten any better. We pick & say he is worst than “Marley & Me” dog. He is always hyper, he has to be into something at all times. Any advice would be helpful. I want him to be a happy boy.

Discipline would be teaching him the basics of obedience…so when he does turn into that wild child, you have a means of putting a halt to the action…Keep a leash on him in the house, so you can grab it when you catch him doing something he shouldn’t be…put him in a sit…and make him wait. That is what I mean by discipline…Dogs really don’t understand “punishment”…like “spanking”…and constant yelling gets you a dog who won’t listen.

Go to tthe National Geographic Channel site, and watch some Dog Whisperer videos…You’ll find tricks and ways to handle your guy…

He visits the vet regulary, so I know it’s not a deficiency. I’m going to try more exercise. How do you discipline without punishing?

Answer #3

when you say he eats everything im thinking maybe he has some kind of deficiency? vitamin, mineral, etc…but as stated before, excersise him and he’ll obviously have less energy and be less bored

We have 2 other dogs, one of which is a boxer. We know how much exercise they need. We do walk them; Worley (the unruley one) loves to play fetch & we play all the time, he also plays a lot with our oldest boxer. Also swim in the bayou by our house. I will admit he does not get much discipline at all. We have always spoiled them. He also has never had any training, besides playing fetch. Thanks…maybe we will try obedience class.

Put him on a leash and start walking him. “A tired dog is a good dog”…this dog is bored…and full of energy…he needs to get worn down daily…Putting him by himself in a yard won’t cut it, in the energy department…and putting him in a room all day without doing anything with him when you get home is begging for temperment problems.

Does he fetch? That’s tiring play!… Have you taken him to obedience classes? (mental stimulation ALSO tires a dog out). This is not a bad dog…this is just a dog bred to work…who has had minimal discipline, minimal training and minimal exercise to burn off puppy energy…

You have to invest a LOT of time into having any breed of dog…but the working and the herding breeds require even more time and training…are you up to it?

Just in case I’m not clear on this point…when I say discipline, I mean stuff like obedience…being taught “the rules” of the house…not punishment…He’s still very young…good luck.
