What is the type of wood to use when making a guitar?

I am making guitars and I want to know type of wood to use.

Answer #1

Oak, Maple, Ebony. Really any wood, just as long as you cut, shape, gloss it the right way.

Answer #2

Though my favorite is Maple.

Answer #3

Spruce is very popular for the top as well as cedar and maple (assuming you are talking about acoustic guitars), guitar necks are generally made from mahogany. The back and sides are made from various woods like mahogany and rosewood makes a very nice back and sides. The fretboard is commonly made of ebony. These woods are the most popular because of their tone, workability and durability and have proven themselves over many years.

Answer #4

I have four acoustics that are all at least 20 years old except for one which is new. They all have solid spruce tops and sound great

Answer #5

It’s different depending on the make of guitar, brand of guitar, etc. Different companies prefer different wood, while some guitars may look/feel better using one type over another. Spruce and Ceder are popular choices, though I have a Maple guitar and I love it.
