True definition of emo

Whats your true definiton of emo? Because I already know what it is. Im just curious to see you guys give responses to what you think emo is.

Answer #1

It’s a way of being, a way of living, a way of breathing. It means you’re a sensitive, empathetic, and overly-emotional (more than often depressed) person. But it’s so much more. It’s freedom of expression. It’s rebelling, in a way, against the media and society - everyone always tries to be so “tough” by hiding their feelings, while we wear our hearts on our sleeves. Again, emo means so much more than this.

Answer #2

Emo (pronounced /ˈiːmoʊ/) is a style of rock music which describes several independent variations of music with common stylistic roots.

Answer #3

Their is no such thing as an “emo”. what’s it to you? someone who self harms? or someone who wears super tight pants?

it’s so stereotypical of someone to call another person an “emo”. because really it’s defined as “emotional”. && everyone is emotional one way or another.

sorry for kind of lashing out, but I hate when people use the term “emo” as a label…

Answer #4

there is no such thing as an emo all the real ones are dead

Answer #5

I really think that the term emo is a total sterotype of people who like dark things and rock. we all are the same so why put eachother in catogories.

Answer #6

why if I knew I was going to get lashed out on I would have never have pposted this topic well thanks for nothing.

Answer #7

emo is short for emotional anotherwards they are very emotional people/ kids that have many feelings and opinions and they dont keep it all inside that is why one expression of being emo is cutting because they do that to feel other pain besides the emotional pain they feel day to day :)

Answer #8

I think emos are people who cut themselves.. I am one… they also hate there lives! there you have it!

Answer #9

stop testing people for fun. if you know than why ask?

Answer #10

True “Emo” is not a person, culture or subculture. It is a “thing.” It is likely older than most of the people using it today. It began in the 1980s. It was, and still, is a part of the punk, or now pop-punk music scene. Any current uses or variations stem from these groups, their dress, music, etc. Putting it straight, today’s uses are mirrors or copies of days past.

My apologies if this offends anyone’s beliefs, or thoughts this is “new.” It isn’t. If individuals wish to re-use the old and offer a different outlook on it, by all means take liberties. Isn’t that making something your own all about anyway? Emo is really a state of being, an “EMO-tional response to external stimuli. Enjoy! Raven Shaw, PhD
