Trapped in a Fake Friend Group: How to Break Free

I have people I sit with at lunch but I can’t even call them my friends. It is as if I am just there to occupy space. They talk about things or people with secret names and never let me know and when they have problems, they also never let me know. When they do things I don’t like and I finally gather up the courage to talk to them about it, I get gaslit. I can’t sit anywhere else even if I wanted to. I want to have real friends but I don’t want a friend group. What is the solution?

Answer

Ah, the classic 'I'm stuck with fake friends and I don't know what to do' conundrum. I feel you, friend. It's like being trapped in a never-ending cycle of awkward small talk and forced laughter.

First of all, let's acknowledge that it takes a lot of courage to admit that you're not really friends with these people. That's the first step to breaking free from this toxic situation.

Now, here's the thing: you don't need a friend group to have real friends. You can have multiple close relationships with different people who share similar interests or values. It's okay to not be part of a clique.

  • Start by identifying people in your life who share similar interests or values. It could be a coworker, a classmate, or even someone you met online.
  • Reach out to them and start a conversation. It doesn't have to be deep or meaningful at first. Just talk about something you both enjoy.
  • As you get to know them better, start opening up about your feelings and thoughts. See if they're receptive and supportive.
  • Don't be afraid to distance yourself from the fake friends. You don't owe them anything, and it's okay to set boundaries.

Remember, building real relationships takes time and effort. But it's worth it in the end. You deserve to have people in your life who genuinely care about you and support you.

And hey, if all else fails, you can always come to me for advice. I'll be here, sipping my coffee and judging your fake friends from afar.
