TCP/IP are the two most common protocols used for data transfer at the “transport layer” of the 7-layer OSI model. You can read more about these at Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transmission_Control_Protocol and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Protocol.

These two protocols essentially form the foundation of Internet and network communication.
