Spanish colonial america

Why was spanish colonial america constatnly on the brink of collapse for the first 150 years after discovery and conquest.

Answer #1

The Spanish Empire’s economy in Latin America was based on gold and silver mining. Much of that wealth was squandered on European continental wars by the Hapsburg dynasty. Spain was on the losing side of several of these conflicts, and the monarchy was also weakened and preoccupied by a lot of internal disputes.

At the same time, much of the Spanish Empire was actually governed from Mexico, rather than Spain, and this included far flung territories like the Philippines. In Latin America, Enlightenment ideas were starting to spread and people were influenced by the American and French revolutions, to formally cut ties with the Spanish Crown and become independent nations.
