It re-stated the goals of the union to create a nation of equality at a time when the nation was slightly sick of the war (the Republican party saw him as a George W. Bush of sorts and kicked him out of the party to run as a 3rd party candidate in the following year).

And on that thought, those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it.
