my weimaraners are the same she lets him come and go around the puppies but lets him know when it’s time to go and they do just fine
it depends on the mother dog, my female chihuahua will let the male around them when they are very very young, but she lets him know if he is getting to close, then as they get a little older she allows him to play and sleep with them. here is a pic if him and his babies
