Mental Institution

The quote on my page gave me this thought, what does a person do to get put into a mental institution? I ask this cause last month my mom tried to put me in one.

Answer #1

Well, when I was younger, my previous stepdad used to abuse me something fierce. I never retaliated against his abuse until he decided to take it to my mom and younger brother. He went after them with a butcher knife so I broke his skull with a baseball bat, unfortunately due to all the anger, bitterness, and resentment I had toward him, I found that I couldn’t easily stop. I was finally feeling rectified for the wrongs done unto me, even though I knew my actions didn’t make it right. The police had me institutionalized and the Doc said that I had sociopathic tendencies. My mom had to get a lawyer involved because the institute refused to release me assuming I was unfit for society, all because I defended my family. I’d do it again without hesitation also, just not to such extremes as before.

Mental institutions of old dont really exist any more. So this really depends on what type of place they take you to. There’s ‘temporary’ places, where they take you like in emergency situations. These are short term, usually if you’re exhibiting psychotic behavior (delusions, hallucinations, etc), if you’re suicidal (this has its rules, you’re not just put in for talking about suicide) or if you’re a danger to others. Now, this place just stabilizes people. If you’re fine in a few days or weeks, they release you. If not, there’s longer term institutions. Generally this is for people who are psychotic, or a danger to self or others, but need longer term care… These are residential facilities… People can be here from months to years… These are a little hard to get out of voluntarily. Then you’ve got other sorts of residential facilities that cater to specific problems. Eating disorders, self harm, substance abuse, there are also mood disorder clinics. These are usually for a couple of months, rarely for longer than a year… In general it is possible (if you’re overage and not in there court ordered), to leave a place like this voluntarily if you’re deemed not to be at risk to yourself or others.

You normally need to be perceived to be a direct threat to the safety of yourself and/or others. So basically, you need to attempt suicide or some weird violent crime

I was in one my freshman year of high school for suicide but you get put in there for mental reason or physical if you harm urself or others

Answer #6

I’m not 100% sure, but delusions, hallicinations and general psychotic behaviour will get you in. It got me in. I can’t really remember that night but I know my mum called the CAT team and they came and picked me up. I was only in there for 3 days though.
