The 4H club in my small town was focused on crafts or raising animals and taking them to competition (many of the animals were then bred and either sold, lived out there days in the barn/coop/pen or went to the butcher. I personally think it's great for kids to be involved and wish I'd pushed my family a bit more to let me participate... but we bred dogs & 4H mainly focused on livestock, not pets.
Overall it's an educational program focusing on leadership, citizenship, public speaking, and life skills
Arts and crafts and community service too I think. I loved 4H when I was little :)
