Do I need a national insurance card for a job?

hey, well I finally turn 16 in august so that means I can get a job..yes but I have to wait for that national insurance card thing? when does it come? because I wana work most of all summer and my birthday is towards the end. So like does the card come a couple of months before because thats what I heard. Also if I wana work in a cafe, coffee shop would they be looking for any particular skills like do I need to have worked somewhere else before? I mean I can make coffee, and I am pretty friendly and I dont mind cleaning… Thanks

Dear funnyboneslove, Not sure about you but here in Canada we call them Social Insurance Cards and you have to apply for them from the Gov’t. We can do this at any age since we can work in restaurants here at 14. Also in Canada by 16 many of the kids already have job experiences or volunteer experience. So if you don’t have your card, volunteer in a soup kitchen or someplace that will show your skills for when you do apply for a job and get your card. Sue…good luck

meh lucky people in canada, actually I think most schools in england let the teens do like 2 weeks of work experience except my ghey school who thinks its a waste of time…I think the card is sent to everyone in the Uk once they reach 16 I dont think you have to apply…thanks for the help anyway. :D
