info on becoming a professional pychiatrist
I was thinking of becoming a pychiatrist I basically know what they do and that after college you have to go to med. school but then I read sumthin about an inhospital residencey and I’m not looking forward to that .. so is anyone here a pychiatrist, are your parents or family members or close friends pychiatrist because I need some advice if its a good field to get into and exactly what I should b looking forward to.. yes I know it involves a lot of schooling I’m in all advanced classes and I’m an A+ student so yea lol thx
A psychiatrist has a full medical education (including internship) and has specialized in mental health. It’s a long, expensive, and difficult education. Psychiatrists don’t ALL spend their time handing out pills, but the focus is mainly directed to medical treatment.
A psychologist also works with mental health, but with less focus on the strictly medical aspects. The training is a littler shorter, and, importantly, the focus is different.
In addition come various types of psychotherapissts and counsellors.
But the first step, as ty writes, is to finish your bachelor’s degree. Talk with a wide range of people, and wait with your decision. No hurry yet.
I’m getting my masters in counseling and I’m going to apply to a doctorate program in psychology… it’s kinda close I suppose? psychiatry never appealed to me because it was very focused on medicinal cures (well they are doctors after all), and so I chose the psychologist path instead… is there a particular reason you want to become a psychiatrist? either way I wouldnt worry about it too much, until you get your bachelors you cant really go to med school, and getting your bachelors should expose you to a lot of different things and allow you to see what you’re interested in…
