Thank you for your input. I have always shied away from this, as a part of the occult. It will be interesting to see other answers, as they come forth.

I was at the fair the other night, where a well known hypnotist was performing. I watched, as he picked about 15 -20 people out of the audience, and worked on them, for all to see.

It was most amazing, and very entertaining, to watch each one, as they did what they were told to do. One girl was told she was a Chinese guard, that had been commissioned to silence the audience, everytime they laughed.

Of course, her actions, brought on great gales of laugher. And it was disconcerting, to see how intensely she responded to the way she had been programed.

She had two children, with her, about 5 & 6 years old, they were somewhat afraid, as they watched their mother, perform. They knew it was totally against her character. And you could tell, they did not understand.

I too, was frightened, when she screamed out, at the area I was sitting in, waving her badge in front of her, and yelling out, in something that sounded like Chinese dialog. She was intensely warning the audience, because this was her command. She was very obedient.

Another man, was commanded to give up his wallet, and he repeatedly kept handing it over to the hypnotist, even though it was handed back to him.

Another woman, was commanded to give away, free steak dinners to everyone around, since she was told, she owned the whole fair. She did this, with great delight, offering everyone to go to the steak shop, in the midway, nearby, and partake. However, there was a slight problem.. the steak shop did not really belong to her. And the people running it, were trained to go along with this, in advance, except for the part of actually handing over their steaks.

There were several others that performed strangely, compared to their normal way of conducting themselves.

My thinking is… how is this done? What power is involved, or is this a skill?

It has been my undstanding in other situations, that a person for instance, submitting to this for the purpose of stopping the smoking addiction, may very well be successful, however, the one that I am aware of personally, then, began to have a different problem, one with weight control. So, it appeared to shift, from one problem to another.

Also, the minds of these people were being completely controlled by this one man, can you just imagine, the horrors that could be unleashed on society, if an evil person was in control of this power?

And, what is there to keep this from happening?

These people were commanded to remember nothing… that evening… but, to remember everything, the next morning.

I see this, as a great potential for abuse, in the wrong hands.

I wonder, how long a person is able to stay under the command, of the hypnotist?

Also, I cannot see how God would approve, of our allowing our minds to be controlled by another?

I don’t think Hyponotism is mentioned in the bible, but, I do think it would fall under a no category, as far as God is concerned.

I am anxious to hear the opinion of the other Christians on the board. And would welcome scripture, that pertains.

Put down the Bible and pick up a copy of the Chicago Style Manual once in a while.

Hypnotism isn’t part of the occult. It’s scientifically sound - though many people claim it to be what it’s not. To answer some of your questions above: Hypnosis can’t compel someone to do something they really don’t want to do. It also can’t influence your body in any way you can’t do yourself, or give you powers beyond what you normally can do.

What it can do is remove inhibitions (which is what stage hypnosis mostly relies on), aid memory, and make you more suggestible (which is what theraputic hypnosis mostly relies on).

I don’t know what he bible has to say about it, but there’s nothing wrong with hypnosis. It’s a pretty simple procedue but require unbreakable focus by the one that’s inducing it. It’s a pretty widespread technique, and is becoming increasingly popular in surgical procedures for those that refuse to take painkiller drugs or don’t want to be put to sleep by medicine. I would never advise anyone to induce hypnosis on themselves unless they are experienced. check out Wikipedia, it has a lot of information on hypnosis and will go into greater detail about it’s uses and processes:

Too funny… What is it about my use of the Period… not the comma… that gets under some peoples skins???

I like it.

It brings my point home.. .since, I am not there with you, in person, and you cannot hear the nuances… I use in my speach… :)

So, in trying to make my point… why can’t I use the Comma… this way ?? :) :)

I would think that they are of much morfe importance, than, the law of grammer.

Oh, and another thing… you just broke another of Gods laws… by swearing by Christ.

We are not to swear by anything, on heaven or beneath the heavens.

Let our yes be yes, and our no be no.

We have no need to swear by anything.

Does not our way of thinking, affect the way we conduct our lives?

Or… are we supposed to confine ourselves… to Sunday School… only?

The bible doesnt say anything about it, its not bad for you or anything. Other people probably explained everything else.
