How to get involved with summer volunteering?

I love animals, I want to be a Vet someday but I am only 14 and I am interested in doing summer volunteering at a local animal shelter or something related to that, but I’ve’e done some research and most of the local shelters say you have to be a certain age like 16 or older to volunteer, so now I think I can’t do summer volunteering. help please?

You could try pet stores or grooming parlours? If you do something like that then it at least shows your interest in animals and will help you secure a place at a shelter when you are old enough. Anything relevant to animals shows you have a real passion and will help you in the future when you come to apply for courses in being a vet.

Why not try writing to some actually vet clinics and asking if you can shadow someone for a day? Eg watch them work and maybe do easy jobs such as cleaning down the tables and even making the vet tea? Just getting to see the environment would be a great benefit to you in making sure you feel it is the right job for you after all.

If you cannot do any of the above then why not try helping out your local animal charity? If you are not allowed to volunteer in their shop/ shelter due to your age then ask if you can go around town with a collection box for them, or better still, use your initiative and organise a charity event to raise funds for them. Anything from a bake sale or carboot to a charity concert with local high school bands and suchlike would be good :) Maybe charge a dollar for a ticket and try and hire a hall out where you can set up stands (fun things like pin the tail on the dog, as well as refreshments) and ask whether local face painters and so on would volunteer their service for free for the afternoon? All you have to do then is tell family and friends about your event and make up some fliers and all your friends can go around town helping you hand them out, and you can stick fliers in shop windows etc. It is suprisingly easy to organise things like this if you organise well and explain your intention (raising funds for whichever shelter)- people like to feel they are doing good for a cause :). Good luck!
