What is jail like?

The worst part about jail is the fact that your rights and freedom have been forcibly taken away from you. As a general rule, they will not put a nonviolent offender with violent offenders. Often, mostly in more populous areas, some of the inmates will put you through a kind of test. As sttitches said, keep your wits about you. Act tough. ABOVE ALL- DO NOT BACK DOWN. Stand your ground, theyre not going to kill, and it will be a whole lot better for you to be seen as strong and confident. Most of these people have been hurt by someone stronger at some point, and they may take advantage of anyone they percieve to be weaker. Usually after they see you are not afraid of them and will engage in some comradere, they will befriend you. This is survival at its most basic. Its not like you want to hang ou twith these people on the outside, so make the best of your current situation, do your time, and STAY THE HECK OUT OF THERE!
