How can my husband find a job with felony charges?

One of my best friends has been through this exact situation lately, so I know how crappy that can be.

I’m assuming that since you are married that you are looking for a DECENT job, not just any job. Plenty of places don’t do background checks, or hire felons, but they’re places like K-Mart, Cinemark movie theatres, Winco grocery stores, Kroger Co. grocery stores, or other low-paying jobs. If these will work, I’d recommend trying these ‘felon-friendly’ employers first. If he’s looking for something better than that though, here are a few pointers:

1. If you have a good education, make sure you make a big point of it on job applications. A good education can balance out a felony, really, it can.

2. If there has been a substantial amount of time since the felony conviction, be sure to make a note of it, I’d say anything over three years is plenty of time for most employers to give the benefit of a doubt, and a shot at a job.

3. If they don’t ask, don’t bring it up. A lot of employers don’t ask, and don’t even care so long as the hire can pass a drug test and doesn’t have tattoos that show.

4. Look for government jobs. Some of these actually give PREFERENCE to felons.
