does anyone know the history of the irish Claddagh?

I have a pair of earrings that are similar to that, but they only have the heart and crown - not the hands. I believe that they are meant to be an 18/19th century reproduction if that is helpful. are they still considered Claddagh earrings?

Answer #1

From what I researched, they are an old Irish cultural object signifying love and friendship. Usually given to a partner as engagement or to show great friendship. Many of the Claddagh items were created in the 16th century, most notably the rings.

I think it is still considered Claddagh even if the design is not 100% because there are varying designs that span hundreds of years before the 16th century. You also don’t have to wear it as purely engagement, some wear it for the Irish heritage as well.

Answer #2

Aleksandr Vyacheslav Golub mostly said it. the crown is for loyalty, the hands are for friendship, the heart is for love. or if you get a different one like i have the irish knots eternity…the eternity of life, the eternity of nature, and the eternity of love.

i have one with just the heart and the celtic knots instead of hands, the heart is real opal and its very pretty.

Answer #3

I bought a Claddagh ring in Ireland, when I bought it, the man told me the knots meant “eternal love” and the crown meant “loyalty”. Above and entwined with the knots are hands which mean “loyal friends”. I cherished it and then lost it in a recent robbery.
