Why do headphones lose sound in one channel after a while?

Almost every headphone pair I have owned has eventually gone dead in one ear. It seems earbuds lack this issue. What is the cause?

Answer #1

The phones effectively have three wires, a common “earth” which is split between the two earpieces and forms a “screen” around the two “active” wires, with those active signal wires usually coloured red (for the right ear-piece) and white (for the left ear-piece). Failure of one channel is usually due to a break in one of those two active wires. The fault often occurs as a result of the ear phones being snagged suddenly when they catch on something whilst you are walking past it.
