where can i get a good old fashioned mercury thermometer?

They are getting rare. Most glass thermometers contain liquids other than mercury these days.

The problem is the mercury. Even though it is only a few grams mercury is a potent neurotoxin that can cause severe damage in growing children so it is being phased out where ever possible.

And to think when I was in high school a retiring science teacher gave me a whole pound of mercury. He knew I was into electrical stuff so he figured I could make switches and relays with it. After owning it over 20 years without finding a use for it I figured I should get rid of it. Accidentally releasing that much mercury could make my home into a Superfund hazardous waste site. I called my university and asked them if they could use it and they said yes so I figured it was safer for them to have it than me.
